Academic Cultural Artistic Association "SPANAC" was founded on 17th of December 1954 with joint efforts of students and professors of the University of Belgrade. For headquarter was chosen "Student City" which was built to accommodate over 6000 students. From the very beginning, its existence is based on four segments of artistic expression:
- - folklore artistic dance
- - choral music
- - traditional music interpretation
- - theatre and performing arts
Initially the only Cultural Association on the territory of, in that period, young municipality of Novi Beograd, "Spanac" had taken the role of organizer and promoter of almost all cultural events in that part of town. However, the Association has rapidly exceeded the local roles, getting involved in more developed social and cultural life of the University and the City of Belgrade. Well organized and conducted by self-critical work of its members and with the proper program orientation, the Association cultivates true values of Serbian, Balkans and world cultural and artistic heritage.
Behind all achievements standing, as convincing argument: Vuk Karadžić award, the Order of the President of the Republic, Order of Brotherhood and Unity, the Charter of the University, Gramata of his Holiness Serbian Patriarch Pavle, gold statuettes and gold medals, first place awards at festivals and competitions in the country and abroad, as well as recognition at the scenes around the world with numerous plaques, certificates and letters of thanks for charity concerts.
In the past six decades ACAA "Spanac" had more than 16000 young artists as its members, many of which are still active in culture and art life all over the world. Its personnel works in wide range of education, from elementary schools to the Academy of Science.
